Physical Properties of Granite :

The term "Granite" means "grain" in Latin word "Granum" because of its granular nature, Granite is an igneous rock (formed by heat) found deep within the Earth's crust. Once quarried, cut, polished, & sealed granite is nearly impervious to scratches, heat, and etching staining, or weathering. It is truly one of Mother Nature's most versatile and beautiful creations. It is very hard, crystalline, and primarily composed of feldspar, quartz accompanied by one or more dark minerals. It is visibly homogeneous in texture.

In terms of its physical properties granite is a unique material. These properties lending uniqueness to granite are:

  • Porosity/Permeability - Granite has almost negligible porosity ranging between 0.2 to 4%.
  • Thermal Stability - Granite is thermally highly stable, so it shows no changes with the changing temperature. Granite is impervious to weathering from temperature and even from the air borne chemicals. It is the highly resistance to chemical erosion which makes granite useful for making tanks to store highly caustic material.
  • Co-efficient of Expansion - The co-efficient of expansion for granite varies from 4.7x10-6 - 9.0x10-6(inch x inch).
  • Variegation - Granite shows consistency in color and texture.
  • Hardness - It is the hardest building stone and hardness of granite that lends it excellent wear.

Granite Composition - Granite is formed of quartz and orthoclase or microcline. The principal constituents of granite are: Feldspar, Quartz & Biotite. Now it's important to note that the percentage composition of each varies and accordingly impart different color and texture to the final product. The percentage composition of feldspar varies between 65-90%, of quartz can extend from 10 to 60% and that of biotite lies between 10 to 15%. Because of these varying minerals percentage in the formation we are seeing numerous natural granite colors such as Shivakashi, Red Multi Color, Crystal Yellow, Kashmir Gold, Indian Juprana, Kashmir White, Absolute Black, Star Galaxy, Vizag Blue, Jhansi Red, Tan Brown, New Imperial Red, Desert Brown and Rosewood.

Uses of Granite : The most common use for granite today is in building and remodeling projects such as Kitchen Countertops, Flooring / Walling, Paving Stone, Vanity and Steps & Risers. The look, feel, durability, and re-sale value of a Granite Kitchen Countertop is unmatched by any other solid surface material on today's market.

Granite Prices : Granite prices depend on several aspects of the stone such as size, availability, place of origin, and demand.

Advantages of Granite

  • Granites are non-porous, which means the surface is scratchproof. This makes it difficult for the surface to retain dust and dirt. It is easy to clean.
  • The granite surface is extremely solid; it is second in line after diamond for strength and hardness.
  • Granites are more lasting than any other kitchen remodeling material.
  • Granites are naturally resistant to heat.
  • Granites can deal with natural weather conditions without any problems.

Disadvantages of Granite

  • The granite slabs are heavy in weight. The heaviness becomes more pronounced then you are using granite slabs and not granite tiles. Before you install granite slabs as kitchen countertops, make sure that the support system of cabinets and pillars are well up o the match.
  • Not all granite stones are affordable. The price factor depends on the amount you want to shell out. However, one thing is for sure that the granite countertops are cost effective, which means even if you spend a large sum of money now, you can easily recover it from the time span of its usability.

All in all we can say that "Granites from India" truly is an all-purpose rock.

Polished : To smooth or brighten a surface increasing the reflective quality and luster by chemical or physical processes. Generally gloss levels should be + 90 as measured by a gloss meter. To achieve this final polishing should be done by latest Italian machines using imported abrasives.

Buffing : Using a non-abrasive pad attached to a machine, which rotates the pad in a circular fashion over the stone, generally between 150-300 RPM. Polishing formulations containing micro-fine abrasive materials are used with buffing to produce a more reflective gloss on the surface of stone. Waxes are also used with buffing to enhance the gloss of polished stone.

Honed : To grind a surface with a high grit material to a uniform specification without producing a reflective surface.

Sawn : i.e. unpolished. It is not advisable to buy this way because : floor polishers do not give as good a polish as factory machine polishers. many defects are not visible easily before polishing.

Calibration : To grind a surface with a high grit material to a uniform surface to maintain the thickness variation.

Gangsaw : To grind two sides of the stone surfaces with a high grit material to a uniform specification without producing a reflective surface.

Shade variation : Slabs / tiles should be sorted to ensure uniformity of shade. Normally, any colour can be sorted into three shades. Sorting is simple -just lay all the material on the floor and look from different directions.

Colour patches : These are darker or lighter patches or bands of single colours due to mineral localisation.

Scratches : The marring of the surface caused by physical trauma such as small stones or sand embedded in shoes scraping across a marble floor.

Staining : The absorption of foreign pigments or oils into the porous stone causing discoloration.
Double color - Sometimes two different grain sizes occur in the same slab, giving the appearance of a double colour.

Free lengths : i.e. lengths varying randomly while width is constant are also very attractive. Choose the widths as per the expected floor area. Buy random lengths and cut at your site to fit.

Flatness Tolerances

A 4' dimension in any direction on the surface shall determine variation from true plane, or flat surfaces. Such variations on polish, hone, and fine rubbed surfaces shall not exceed tolerances listed below or 1/3 of the specified joint width, whichever is greater. On surfaces having other finishes, the maximum variation from true plane shall not exceed the tolerance listed below or + 3 mm of the specified joint width, whichever is greater.

Polished, honed or fine rubbed finishes... + 0.5 mm
Sawn, Calibrated, 4-cut and 6-cut.... + 1 mm

Edges also can be chamfered / bevelled. Chamfering removes whiteness and chipped edges. This looks very good. Chamfering is a simple process in which a polishing brick is run at an angle of 45 ?.

Polished Granite

  • One Side Fine Mirror Polished.
  • Gangsawn/Cutter side
  • Thickness variation is + 0.5 mm to 1 mm depending upon Tile/Slab.

Finishes

The stone is available in a range of smooth and textured finishes:

WATERJET : a non-slip matt finish, produced by working the surface of the stone with high-pressure water jets

HONED : a smooth finish with a slight sheen, produced by using a polishing head.

SANDED : sawn stone slabs are coarsely polished: this removes saw marks and leaves a semi-smooth, regular finish.

CLEFT : with this traditional treatment the stone is riven along its line of cleavage to reveal the natural grain; this gives an undulating surface with great character.

GRITBLASTED : a high-pressure airline projects coarse-grained grit onto the top surface of the stone producing a finish similar to cleft, but available on slabs of greater size.

FLAMED : is produced when an intense flame is fired at the stone, causing the surface to burst and become rough. This finish is used primarily for exteriors applications where slip-resistance is extremely important.

FLAMED AND BRUSHED : This process entails passing a blowpipe that emits a high-temperature flame over the surface to be treated. The heat acts by blowing the crystals out as they suffer thermal shock, with an effect that is particularly evident in materials composed of minerals with various degrees of expansion, (such as the vast majority of granites). The resulting surface is rough, non-slip and generally faded in colour, thereby hiding defects and tone variations. Because of oxidation, yellow materials become orange or red.

FINISHTEXTURED : the top surfaces of sawn slabs are pneumatically tooled to produce a pitted or grooved surface.

LEATHER : a specially developed metallic brushing technique that exploits the natural variability in a stones crystal composition and structure to create a subtle tactile finish. On some materials this gives the feeling of leather to the touch whilst other materials, those with a fine even grain composition, the result is more like that of lemon peel.

CARESS : a newer finish that are created by using stiff bristle brushes. However, in this case the brushing process gets deeper into the grain of the granite. These stiff brushes scour out softer minerals in the veins of the granite slab at different levels, creating a smooth surface with a slight bumpy texture.

POLISHED : is a highly reflective, mirror gloss finish. The full color, depth and crystal structure of the stone is visible. A polished finish seals surface pores and is therefore nearly impervious to chemical wear and weather.

ANTIQUE : finish replicates a distressed or aged appearance on the stone surface and will vary depending upon the stone type selected.

BUSHAMMERED : is a specialized stone-working hammer with a head that resembles a meat tenderizing hammer. Because the head of the hammer is usually small (about 1-2 inches square) it takes a long time to apply this finish to a large surface area. The result leaves the surface of the stone fairly smooth with small indentations. A bush-hammered finish can be applied to nearly all stones.

Frequently Asked Question

Do you have a Quarry?

No, we don't have a quarry because owning a quarry will not serve our objective of catering to demands of more than one variety of granite to our customers worldwide. We do have tie ups with the quarries whereby we practically get the best portion of the quarry area allotted to us by granting advance to the quarry owner. We are literally the owners of this particular portion and all the production of this area belongs to us.

Do you have a Factory?

We have strategic alliances with factories having very good production capacity with some of the latest machines (Italian etc) for cutting. We have struck a deal with these companies to get our blocks processed at a highly reasonable cost. These companies are assured of continuous orders from our side which makes it a win- win situation for not only us but also for our customers (in the form of advantage in cost which is passed on to them.) Also, the factory owners lack the entrepreneur ability and most of them put up the factories to avail the extraordinary benefits by the govt.

Are you a trading company? Are you agents for the factory or the quarry?

We are a trading company with a difference. We have the inherent advantages of both owning a quarry and a factory due to our strategic alliances with quarry owners and factory owners. We, infact, have merchant exporters sourcing from us.

For all practical purposes, we are at par with the manufacturers. It is just that we do not own a quarry, for it does not enable us to cater to demands of varieties from our customers all over the world. The company does not believe in confining itself to just a few stones and owning a quarry would do just that. We actually believe in being an international player catering to the market dynamics of more than one market condition (i.e., more than one nation or territory.)

What is your delivery time?

We hold stock of over 100 containers of all popular varieties of stones for the convenience of our buyers worldwide. This enables us in shipping the containers within 24 hours of placing the order.

Who does your quality control in the quarry / warehouse?

Chariot International firmly believes that there can be no substitute for good quality especially in the international market. We have our own quality control inspectors trained by us who thoroughly understand our quality control policies deputed in the various quarries where our purchase managers would have decided to buy from. This enables us to keep a complete control over the stones marked and transported to our factories. We thus do not allow any untoward to chance in the hands of the third party.

In a similar fashion, we have our quality inspectors deputed to the factory to monitor the whole process starting from cutting the block to manufacturing tiles to ensure international standards through out.

Why should we buy from you?

We firmly believe that you should buy from us because we see no reasons why you should be deprived of such a good deal.

We offer you good deals in terms of pricing, in quality, in purchase (in terms of convenience) with immediate shipping and last but not the least in terms of after sales customer support.

We, at Chariot International, believe in giving the best to our buyers because we know that they deserve nothing but the best.

What are your delivery and payment terms ?

DELIVERY : Normally 3 to 4 weeks are required for processing of order from date of receipt of order or L/C for standard sizes . However, for specific size orders extra time may be required but requests for earlier delivery will be done as per request.

PAYMENT : As in any international trade context, we start with Irrevocable L/C at sight favoring, Chariot International, 611,"C" Block, AECS Layout, Kundalhalli, Bangalore - 560 037. With repeated dealings, we intend to be more flexible keeping in mind the interests of both the parties involved.

What do you mean by online store?

As the name itself suggests, our online store endeavors to give the pleasure and convenience of shopping for stones from anywhere in the world without the inconvenience of reaching out to the point of contact of supplier. The store is designed in such a manner that the usual bottlenecks in a typical e-business scenario is removed by adding an element of interactivity. Every effort is done to give a personal touch to the buying process to instill enough confidence in the minds of the buyers and enough (comprehensive) information to facilitate the buying process.

To sum up, the objective of the online store is to give the buyers the benefit of shopping from a production unit placed millions of miles away without having to compromise with the quality, delivery, price and credibility of the supplier that is so crucial to the whole buying process.

How can you give me good prices if you are not a factory owner?

In fact it is the other way around. The very reason and the fact that we don't own factories gives us special advantages that we pass on to our customers.

Our production process is not enslaved by the inevitable depreciation caused to the quality of the machines. Choosing the unit with the best machines in the best shape is solely at our discretion.

We are under no such obligation to transport the raw material to a far away production unit that may lead to incurring unnecessary transport cost. We would rather take up the best unit close by and get the stones processed there. This again enables us to give a better pricing to our buyers.

We have strategic alliances with the units where we get our job work done. Infact, one of the reasons behind not having a factory is the advantage that we see in this strategic alliance with such units. They look up to us as we provide orders and since they are sure of obtaining the same, they willingly provide the service at a highly reasonable cost. This is yet another logical justification for resorting to job works. It is a win win situation for not only us but also for the customer who is a definite part of the profit made.

How is your Quality?

We match international standards. The very fact that we export to over 20 countries is a testimony to this fact. We incorporate quality checks at every stage starting from quarrying to packing. We depute our own quality inspectors at the quarries and follow the same practice in the production unit as well. The qualified geologists deputed at the quarry to do the needful.

Quality checks incorporated :

Gloss meter : for assuring the required gloss on the surface
We make sure that there are no scratches on the surface by close observation by our experts.

We maintain the thickness and the size according to the specification.

How are the slabs produced?

Process: Blocks are moved from the quarries. Blocks are then sent to the the factories (on job work basis) with excellent Italian machines. Plan is made as to how each block is cut. The uneven portions of the blocks are dressed with a wire saw. The blocks are cut into slabs by gang saw machines and polished by line polishing machines.

Can you mix sandstone and granite together in one container?

We have no problems in mixing up the sandstone with granite. But we strongly advise the customers not to resort to this combination. The reason is that granite is available in south India whereas sandstone in the north. India being a vast country and keeping the transport conditions and the cost involved in bringing both the stones to the same point would mean so much more overheads and thereby increase in the price.

How do you inspect blocks?

The blocks are checked for fractures / patches on the surface. They are checked for patches and any other fracture that might have caused due to blasting or just naturally. Water is poured on the block to test for color variation, regularity of the pattern. (all 6 sides are checked similarly.)

What is open top container?

It is a container that is open from the top that enables loading from the top.

What is box container?

The container that is closed from all sides.

What are free lengths?

These are slabs without any specific measurement bought by the buyer so that he may cut them into required specifications at his end.

What is the process once we place an order with you?

Thanks to immediate stocks, we will ship the goods within 24hours of receiving the order. The goods are loaded into the containers at our unit. The customs executive cross checks the containers with the invoice and after matching them, it is sealed and taken to the internal port. It is sent to Chennai from where it is shipped to the destination.

How long does it take from the time of order to delivery at our warehouse?

Depending on high seas time, as far as shipment is concerned, we take around a day from our end.

Who are your competitors?

We have no Indian competitors but it is an irony that Italians and Chinese who import rough blocks from India and get them processed and sell them in the international market with their strong marketing skills are our main competitors. China gives good competition in terms of price but they cannot match Indian Quality.

Why do you call your company 'Unique'?

Our company is unique in the way it markets its products and the distinct approach it has adopted towards customers.

To tell you a few of them:

Concept of online store to facilitate e-trading is an innovative idea. We have not only introduced a store but are planning to take it one step further wherein we intend to give our online buyers the rich shopping experience along with personal care rendered by our customer care executive who would collaborate the navigation on the net along with the customer and assist him in a similar fashion as done on a physical plane.

Chariot International is in a position to offer the best pricing as a natural culmination of its strategic alliances with factories where it gets the job work done. These alliances render an immense advantage in the form of reduced cost which in turn is passed on to the valued buyers.
